Darkest of Days Review

Every now and then, a game will catch you so off guard that you won’t know what to make of it. To that effect, Darkest of Days is one of the most bewildering first-person shooter experiences that I’ve ever had. The plot setup is ace, with a soldier from Custer’s last stand being zapped into the future because he’s the only one that can stop a group of time-dicks from killing key historical figures. While the lack of Rufus is unsettling, the rampant paradoxes that I aimed to cause filled my mind with happy. All that I could think about was assaulting Civil War Confederates with rocket launcher-equipped dinosaurs and driving my flying supercar through the barracks of a Nazi training camp. Of course, Darkest of Days doesn’t let you do any of that, nor does it offer anything remotely entertaining, leaving you with game that packs the fervor and intensity normally reserved for a Sunday afternoon war reenactment.

Katamari Forever Review

Is it possible to sum up the entirety of a culture with a single retail product? I wouldn’t think so for many countries, but I do believe that the Katamari Damacy series absolutely nails what makes Japan such an interesting spectacle to many of us gamers. Giant robots? Check! Hyper-bright neon colors everywhere? You know it! Widespread chaos caused by untamed behemoths? Of course! With thousands of unexplainable oddities ready to be seen, Katamari Forever is bringing the series’ unique brand of inspired lunacy to the PlayStation 3, but has the novelty worn off after five years of ball-rolling exuberance?

Wet Review
You know how you sometimes flip through cable channels after midnight, hoping to stumble upon something to keep you from being grappled by the inescapable clutches of the Sandman? Wet would be considered the holy grail of late night cable television. It is a game that absorbs the best aspects of the past few decades of Hollywood B-movies and revels in them, delivering an action-packed experience that made me giggle gleefully more times than I’d care to admit.

Big Red Reviews Are Coming

‘Sup. So, in the interest of expanding the boundaries of the large crimson one, we are going to begin posting game reviews on the site on a fairly regular basis. The first one will be a Vanderhuge production for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which is available now for the *breathes in* PS2, PS3, PSP, PC, Xbox 360, DS, Wii, and mobile phones. I’m hoping that the Game Gear and Commodore versions won’t be far behind.
But because we like to roll differently around here, our Big Red Reviews will contain some unique BRP touches. Knowing is half the battle, so we’ve decided to outline our review plans for your perusal:
- There will be short ‘n’ sweet written reviews. We won’t be assigning scores, ‘tho you might see a Borat-style ‘VERY NICE!’ if we’re really impressed. They’ll be penned by one, or maybe both of us…
- There will also be audio reviews that will be entirely different from the text. These will be 2-5 minute mini-casts, only available on the site, in which we will go into a bit more detail about the game and whether it is or isn’t worth your precious, precious time.
In addition, we will be experimenting (and ain’t that the word) with video over the next few weeks, though not in the traditional “video review” sense. Lastly, don’t fret; none of this will affect the main podcast and its format - this is simply, and only, the beginning of us fleshing out the site into something glorious. Stay tuned Big Red Potioneers, and of course - GO JOE… ME!
