Big Red Everything

South Carolina, watch out – you have a Joseph DeLia amongst you. And he’s all about the booze. While Joe enjoys the delicacies of a state named after King Charles I – thanks Wikipedia! – the rest of the Big Red Potion crew have been sweating the last droplets of summer in the comfort of their gaming chairs.

Big Red Summer

So, as Big Red Potion finally gets rolling again after its impromptu Summer hiatus, I thought it was high time for another Big Red Everything. But because we’ve been AWOL all summer, we’ve gone with a bonanza edition that I like to call Big Red Summer. Here’s what the crew has been up to this sunny season.

Episode 42: Games That Aren’t Games with Lewis Denby

Big and Red is back, baby! Joining Sinan in the pod is the returning glory that is Joe DeLia, and the regular delights that are Jeffrey Matulef and Eddie Inzauto. But that’s not all. The pod is also joined by special guest and freelance journalist extraordinaire Lewis Denby to talk about games that aren’t games, or more accurately to dissect what exactly is the stuff that actually makes up video games. All this and a Heavy Rain mention? It could only be Big Red Potion.

The 100K Club: Karl Moon

Completing the series in which I’ve so far interviewed Jennifer Allen and Tony Atkins, both part of the 100K club as Xbox 360 gamers who’ve earned more than 100,000 Achievement points, I now put the same questions to one Karl Moon. Like Jennifer and Tony, Karl has amassed the same mighty GamerScore total and then some, but he says it’s not about the score but the individual games and their individual Achievements. Read on for a very thought-out and extensive interview.

As for me, reading through Jennifer’s, Tony’s, and Karl’s answers has mellowed my views on Achievements a little. They all made strong arguments for the merits of Microsoft’s system, and why some of its negative aspects are more to do with my own personality more than any flaws and intrusions the system has and makes. But I’m no convert, and I still think their answers reveal a few of the problems of the system, be them deliberately revealed or inadvertently. Either way, it’s interesting how a system can impact so differently on different gamers, and there’s no denying that Achievements have changed the gaming landscape of recent years.

I’d like to once again thank Jennifer, Tony, and Karl for giving up their time to answer my questions. I hope readers enjoy this feature as much as I’ve enjoyed reading their answers myself.
